• Beach & Surf

  Set on the beach of one of Costa Rica’s top surfing destinations, Latitude 10 Beach Resort is located in the heart of a rainforest, with the ocean as its front yard, and the sophisticated surfing town of Santa Teresa within easy walking distance.

  Due to the variety of uncrowded beaches offering a variety of surfing experiences, Santa Teresa attracts experienced local surfers who don’t mind sharing the waves with the tourists visiting the area.  This is an area that respects true surf culture, where the goal is to get the most out of each wave and passionately protect the beaches that provide the experiences.

  The beauty of Latitude 10 is that it offers guests a variety of surfing experiences within easy distance. The main surf beach, Playa  Carmen is on the border between Malpais and Santa Teresa. It has a good set of sand bars that offer some nice lefts and slightly longer rights. As with all beach breaks, the sand bars can change overnight, so check in with the staff at Latitude 10 for the latest conditions. The break of Playa Carmen is popular with long-boarders but you can always find a few hot short-boarders pulling tail slides, aerials and 360s. Another bonus is that Rip tides and beach breaks at Playa Carmen are less powerful than in other surf spots of the Costa Rican Pacific, making the surf suitable for beginners to learn on.

  For the beaches in Latitude 10’s front yard, the waves are bigger and more hollow than Playa Carmen. Generally this area is for experts only and is better with larger swells. Here it is easier to find your own uncrowded peak but surfers are warned to be careful for submerged rocks in the sea.  The waves tend to get  faster and more consistent as you walk south of Suck Rock towards Playa Santa Teresa, where you will find a broad beach with many classic beach breaks.

  Finally, about a kilometer and a half north of Latitude 10 is Playa Hermosa, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and due to the fact that there are very few hotels in the area, it remains a ‘local secret’. Playa Hermosa tends to serve long boarders with its longer lefts and rights from mid low to mid high tides.

  The Malpais area has a couple of great spots with longer waves the usually go off with larger swells, one at the point behind Sunset Reef Hotel, adjacent to Cabo Blanco reserve and another near the soccer field in Malpais.
