at Latitude 10°
At Latitude 10°, sustainability guides our everyday decisions. It’s ingrained in our guest experience. Explore some of our sustainable practice highlights here.
No Plastic Policy
We’re proud to have banished all single-use plastics from the resort.
Here’s why: They take vast quantities of fossil fuels to produce, and are non-biodegradable. More often than not, used bottles don’t get recycled either. Far too many end up in the oceans we love. We instead encourage you to use the reusable aluminum bottles provided at the hotel.
We have also replaced single-use plastic straws with locally-made bamboo stalks. They’re compostable! This helps us reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste produced at the resort.
Native Plant Nursery
Our answer to small-scale reforestation
The vast majority of the trees and plants you’ll see on our beach house property are native to this region of Costa Rica. These plants naturally flourish in our climate, requiring drastically less water and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. They also attract the local wildlife.
At our small native plant nursery, we don’t use any plastic potting bags for our seedlings. One of our staff members came up with the brilliant idea of using discarded coconut shells instead!
Local Food Sourcing
We’re bringing local sourcing even closer
We’re in the process of developing an onsite vegetable and a spice garden. Our goal is for the garden to provide some of the key ingredients for our tasty home-cooked dishes. At the same time, we’re also working on a compost area as a smart solution for our organic restaurant waste and for our future veggies.
Awards & Memberships
We’re serious about sustainability.
Latitude 10° is a member of the Cayuga Collection of Sustainable Hotels and Lodges. As a whole, we were awarded the accolade of Earth Changers at National Geographic’s World Legacy Awards in 2017. The accolade recognizes cutting-edge leadership in environmentally friendly business practices and green technology, from renewable energy and water conservation, to zero-waste systems and carbon-emissions reduction.
Latitude 10° is too small to be formally certified as sustainable. But this doesn’t hold us back. We work hard to go above and beyond the standards with our green operations.
Complimentary Bicycle Rentals
The scenic and greenest way to explore Santa Teresa.
Every day. Every action.
It all makes a difference.
“The first thing my kids noticed were the recycled bottles full of plastic at the bar. When Ingacio explained that if they could find a bottle on the beach and fill it with any garbage they collected, they could get a free smoothie, they ran to the beach and started looking for trash (hard to find on this one!)…great idea and we’ve incorporated it here back home!”
